I don’t know if you’re aware that PostgreSQL Conference Europe (in Berlin this year) will have a daycare option for children. It’s been published here.
I’m really happy with this and I hope this will help more parents to attend the event. Please follow the instructions if you need to add this option to your registration for the event.
What will children do? 🔗
The professionals who will take care of the children suggested the following activities:
- Face and nail painting
- Creative projects and handicraft
- Games and toys for all ages
- Books for all ages
- Supervised walks and exercise
My 7 y-o was already jumping around when I said “face and nail painting”. Anyhow, she was also very excited about the idea to meet new children!
What about language? 🔗
That’s a tough topic in Europe. Having daycare for a European event means that some children might have no common language with the staff. The professional childcare provider we contacted told us it was not a problem and that’s something they were used to, having provided childcare on international cruise ships. Children will always find ways to express themselves. The staff will be fluent at least in German and English. I’m very curious to find out how it will work with my 7 y-o who can only speak French but is very sociable.
What about teenagers? 🔗
So, the daycare option is available for children from 3 to 15 years old. When I asked my 13 y-o, she said it was for babies and that she could certainly take care of herself. So, I decided that on top of touring the city with her father, she will attend one talk with me. The right question is which one?
Here’s a selection of talks that (in my opinion) can be followed by a teen with no to little knowledge of the database world:
- How to make your Postgres blog posts reach a ton more people by Claire Giordano
- Documentation: Let’s make it better, now, together! by Sarah Haïm-Lubczanski
- Postgres Trivia with Crunchy Data by Stephen Frost
To conclude 🔗
I’m very happy that PgConf Europe decided to try a daycare option. I guess several people (me amongst them) are very curious to find out how it will go.
